How to Safely Store Guns and Similar Items at Home
Every household contains a number of items that can pose a threat to health and, in extreme cases, even life. We are aware of some of these, while for others, we may not realize the potential danger until a child joins the family. It is impossible to prevent dangerous incidents 100% of the time, but simply the way these items are stored can significantly reduce the risk of accidental injury.

When it comes to knives, especially kitchen knives, they are an integral part of our kitchen equipment and we use them practically every day. It is advisable to store them in a kitchen drawer or in a knife block, such as a wooden one with compartments for individual knives, or in a block lined with plastic or other soft bristles that prevent the blades from becoming dull. For both practical and decorative reasons, knives can also be stored on a magnetic strip attached to the kitchen counter or wall. Knives that come in a sheath (e.g., hunting knives) should be kept in this protective sheath for safety reasons.

As for items of a more decorative nature, such as replicas of historical weapons, etc., if displayed on a wall, emphasis should be placed on securing them properly, ideally out of children’s reach, and protecting any sharp points (on swords, rapiers, etc.).
If firearms are stored in a house, apartment, or non-residential space, the rules for their possession must be followed, as set forth by the relevant legal regulations, namely the Weapons Act and the Government Regulation on Security Requirements for Weapons, Ammunition, and Black Powder. The least stringent obligations are imposed by law on owners of up to two firearms or up to 500 rounds of ammunition, requiring that these firearms and ammunition be adequately secured against misuse, loss, and theft; however, the method of securing them is not prescribed. In the case of larger quantities of firearms and ammunition, the law requires that they be secured in lockable steel boxes or cabinets. The law also stipulates that a firearm kept by the owner must not be stored in a loaded state. There are several companies on the market that offer suitable equipment for the safe storage of firearms and ammunition; given the risks associated with improper handling of this type of weapon, the purchase and consistent use of such equipment is highly recommended.
